We breathe over 20,000 times a day—but how often do we really notice it?
Breath is the bridge between the body and the mind. It’s the one function that’s both automatic and under our control. When we’re anxious or overwhelmed, our breath shortens. But the beauty is: we can shift our mental state by simply shifting how we breathe.
In yoga, breath awareness is called pranayama—a practice that’s been refined for thousands of years. Whether it’s a slow, grounding exhale or a deep belly breath, intentional breathing can lower cortisol levels, improve focus, and even balance the nervous system.
A simple exercise: try inhaling for four counts, pausing for two, then exhaling for six. Do this for just a few minutes and feel the difference in your energy. Breathwork doesn’t require a mat, a teacher, or even privacy. You can do it at your desk, in traffic, or while waiting in line.
In a world that constantly pulls our attention outward, breath is the quiet anchor that draws us back in. So the next time life feels chaotic, take a breath—then take another. Peace is often just a few mindful breaths away.
